Justin Bieber at the MTV EMA: Then and Now
We're counting down to the 2020 MTV EMA, looking back at some of our favourite moments from past shows! Can you believe Justin Bieber has been a major part of the ceremonies for almost a decade now?? In honor of The Biebs and his multiple nominations this year (Best Canadian Act, Best Artist, Best Collaboration, Best Pop, Biggest Fans, and Best Video for starring in DJ Khaled and Drake's "Popstar"), we're taking a trip down memory lane. Walk with us!
Awwww, remember when Justin Bieber was a fresh-faced kid who had *just* graduated from swoopy hair and hoodies? Here he is hitting the 2011 MTV EMA carpet in Belfast, Ireland.
This was still so early in his career (also, life)! The joy on his face from just swiveling in a chair??? It's so pure. :')
Later on, Biebs would chat with an extremely pink-haired Katy Perry in that very same chair…
...and then leave the chair to accept one of the top awards of the night: Best Male.
The reigning prince of pop blew the Belfast audience away with a medley of "Mistletoe" and "Never Say Never," somehow nailing the transition from twinkly winter wonderland to acrobatic stunts and roaring fire LED graphics.
And to cap it off, he ended the night a double winner, nabbing the award for Best Pop Act before the show was over.
When the 2012 MTV EMA went to Frankfurt, Germany, Biebs was in the middle of a world tour, but that didn't stop him from accepting his awards for Best Male, Best Pop and Best World Stage remotely (a word and concept we all probably know a LOT more intimately now).
Bieber came back to the MTV EMA in 2015 in a big way with a new sound, a new perspective, and another totally new look. Enter Bleached Bieber.
He high fives his fans!
He poses for pictures!
He unleashes megawatt smiles!
He crushes a live performance of his monster hit "What Do You Mean?" despite suffering from a broken ear drum!
And even in the midst of all the action, Bieber found some time to enjoy a little cheers moment with Ed Sheeran, who hosted the show with actress Ruby Rose.
But let's be real, Biebs found himself up on stage at the 2015 MTV EMA a lotttttt to collect awards. Here he is accepting for Best Male…
...and then going in for a hug from Camila Cabello after Fifth Harmony announced his win for Best Look.
All in all, Bieber took home six awards, and… it seems like he was pretty happy about it!
