Everything You Need To Know About 2017’s Best New Artists

October 10, 2017
Meet the newbies who've made their way into the 2017 EMA nominee lineup and are vying for the award you can only win once, the Best New award.

Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa's a YouTube success story who went from sharing videos of her song covers to being signed to a major record label. The 22-year-old Londoner just released her debut, self-titled album and so far it's been a huge hit. Her career really took off when one of the album's singles, "New Rules," a song about laying down rules to get over someone, became a number one track in several countries including the UK. She's currently touring the world with Bruno Mars and already has a second album in the works.

Julia Michaels

While you may not be familiar with Julia Michaels just yet, you likely know a handful of the songs she's written. The 23-year-old Michaels has had a part in writing countless chart-topping pop songs like Justin Bieber's "Sorry," Little Mix's "Love Me or Leave Me" and most of Selena Gomez's second album!
Michaels is finally putting herself—and her voice—out there with the release of her debut album, Nervous System. The songs on the album, such as "Issues," pair vulnerable, honest lyrics with emotional vocals. We foresee Michaels and her relatable love songs being in the spotlight for a long, long time.

Khalid is a 19-year-old, American singer-songwriter who quickly went from average high school student to international sensation when his song, "Location," became a platinum hit. On his debut album, American Teen, Khalid sings about the struggles of modern life, like the way romance plays out in DMs and texts. In addition to relatable lyrics, Khalid has some impressive vocals, which come from a background singing opera and musical theatre. His musical ambitions were inspired early in his life due to his mother's musical career. He counts Aaliyah, Father John Misty, Billie Holiday and his mom (!!!) as his musical influences.

The 24-year-old rapper KYLE is a California native with the happy-go-lucky attitude and free spirit vibes to show for it. He may be a newbie but he's already teamed up with lots of talented artists like Chance The Rapper, G-Eazy and Miguel. His feel-good hit, "iSpy," which features Lil Yachty, has been massively successful and hints at a bright future for KYLE. He may go home with mulitple awards come EMA night because his playful video for "iSpy" is up for a Best Video EMA!
