EMA winners in Retrospect: best Song

September 21, 2016
At the 1997 EMAs the Hanson bros snagged the Best Song award for their world-famous hit "Mmmbop," but was it *truly* the best song of that year?

Don't get us wrong, we're major Hanson fans and Mmmbop still gives us serious #feelings, but the competition in the Best Song category was stiff. The other nominated songs, No Doubt's "Don't Speak," Will Smith's "Men in Black," The Cardigans' "Love Fool," and Puff Daddy's "I'll Be Missing You" are all worthy of a karaoke sesh.

What made Mmmbop the *best* song? Hanson wrote the song themselves so that def earns them some points. It also didn't hurt that the bros were total heartthrobs with voices of angels—think the voice of Justin Bieber meets Ed Sheeran's meets One Direction. So maybe Mmmbop did deserve the Best Song title after all. "I'll Be Missing You" comes in at a close second tho.
