With the news that the 2015 MTV EMA will be held at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan, Italy, we naturally had to take a #TBT look back to the first time that city hosted our big show—way back in 1998. The ever-irreverent Jenny McCarthy, then an MTV personality, presided over the none-too-ceremonial ceremony.
So just who was big on the European music scene back then?
Well, there was cheeky British pop star Robbie Williams, always a genius at poking fun at himself.
There was the one and only Madonna, who had recently acquired her affected British accent (and is not so good at poking fun at herself).
There were EDM pioneers The Prodigy, who more or less set the template for every song you dance to in clubs now.
And there were the Spice Girls (represented by Emma "Baby Spice" Bunton and Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm), champions of girl power on the pop music scene. No doubt fierce female artists of today, like Nicki Minaj, Alicia Keys, and Ariana Grande, owe these ladies a debt for blazing that trail—in platform heels, no less!
Check out this recap of the 1998 MTV EMA in Milan. Can't wait to find out which global superstars will join us for our 2015 return to the city…and maybe inspire future generations of pop stars!
